With this latest series of recordings, saxophonist Stephen Gauci continues his study of, and experimentation with the classic piano quartet format.
"Far from being 'free for all' improvised music brouhahas, the personnel for each group was chosen with careful consideration with regards to their strong musical personalities. Essentially, each quartet is a group of leaders. The saxophone functions not merely as a melodic instrument, but as a "controller wand" of sorts. Each gesture, each phrase that I emote, elicits a corresponding gesture from the various rhythm section musicians. 'Playing' the rhythm section is as much a compositional device as writing out parts.. and a far more creatively open, in-the-moment methodology over all. This method requires a 'sense' of the other musical personalities assembled on the stage. An intuitive feel for how each motif, each gesture will be perceived, and reacted to. This is a very different conception than just hiring musicians to support one's musical efforts. It is the process of diverting/rerouting/unifying the incredible energy and creativity that each musician brings to the table. In this way, even with well established musical personalities, we create something new, fresh, and revelatory."
"These various quartet recordings should be regarded as part of an integral whole, and may be treated as a comparative study. For me, as a saxophonist, these quartet performances have greatly deepened, and broadened my understanding of my own sound/phrasing uniqueness, and how it works with others. What better path to musical self-awareness than to hear one's voice/concepts reflected back through the playing of some of the greatest living musical personalities? My hope is that as the listener compares the various quartets, and how each group interacts, they are also able to perceive that invisible, unique 'something'.. what it is that makes each of these quartets 'Gauci's thing'" .
Wishing each of you peace, love, and the deepest well-being. - S.G.
