This recording documents the first musical meeting of New York City luminaries vocalist Noa Fort, saxophonist Sam Newsome, and bassist Sean Conly.

A longtime admirer of both Newsome and Conly, Fort invited them to record an improvised set together (in front of a live audience). One tune, Plant People, was pre-composed and the rest a collaborative improvisation. Noa says "Keeping things open allowed each of us to fully bring ourselves to the new setting. With Newsome’s imaginative palette of sonic possibilities, Conly’s grounded, flexible and percussive sound, and my search for different timbres and melodies, we moved effortlessly between lyrical moments and explosions of sounds and energy. Both Sam and Sean’s playing can be so percussive that the absence of drums is almost unfelt."

This wonderful and creative set of music proves, (in contravention of the old adage), that "First time is indeed the charm"! -S.G.

A very interesting album. At a few places I keep asking myself: Was this composed by Arnold Schönberg (or his disciples)? Anyway, I'm all for skilled musicians exploring the boundary (if one exists) between jazz and classical. Thumbs up! jyrki63

This is tremendous stuff, one of my favorite albums of the year thus far. While I'm familiar with the work of Lopez and Cleaver and they are as usual excellent here, it is the work of Baczkowski that lifts this from being very good to being a year-end list calibre album. Fiery, propulsive musicianship with tremendous communication between the musicians. arbitify
