about

For Stephen Gauci, all roads lead back to the saxophone trio.

Originally inspired by both Sonny Rollin's, and Joe Henderson's "Live at the Village Vanguard" recordings, Gauci developed his overall improvising concept in the trio setting. When he moved to New York City in 2000, his first recording was "Long Night Waiting" (Cadence Jazz), a trio session with his mentor & friend bassist Michael Bisio, and drummer Jay Rosen.

More recently Gauci has been flexing his trio muscles with the Bushwick Series house band trio featuring bassist Adam Lane, and drummer Kevin Shea. That group, having played weekly for 5 years, and with three albums under their belt, now forming the core of Gauci's working quartet (yes, a trio WITHIN a quartet).

"This trio recording represents a reunion of sorts with my brother in music, Michael Bisio, and also a first time out the gate with drummer Whit Dickey. Dickey and Bisio having worked together extensively with both pianist Matt Shipp and saxophonist Sabir Mateen, I thought Whit would be the perfect choice for the drum seat. I was wrong, he was even better!"
-S.G.
